Summary

This introductory course will equip you with theoretical grounding and basic competencies in disaster risk management, including skills in disaster risk assessment, awareness of the impacts of climate change on disasters, as well as knowledge of the South African context, such as developing integrated development plans.

Subject Matter Expert

Martha Sibanda holds a PhD in Administration from the University of KwaZulu-Natal, with a special focus on disaster management in the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality. Her other research interests include development management, climate change impact on rural and the urban poor, sustainable cities, gender issues and innovative pedagogical practices in higher education in Africa.

Martha has worked as a lecturer and module coordinator at the School of Disaster Management at Stenden University, South Africa. She has also worked as a researcher at the e-Learning Department at the University of the Western Cape.

She is passionate about sharing new skills and knowledge with others, and ultimately enhancing their capabilities in handling issues that affect their line of work and personal lives.
